Understanding Topical Steroid Withdrawal: Looking Beyond the Skin

12/6/2025

For many people, topical steroid withdrawal doesn’t begin with a decision to stop steroids.
It begins years earlier.
With eczema.
Then stronger creams.
Then more frequent flare-ups.
Eventually the creams seem to work less well, or symptoms return more quickly when they’re stopped.
By the time someone reaches topical steroid withdrawal, they’ve often spent years trying different creams, elimination diets, supplements and advice.
Many arrive feeling exhausted, overwhelmed and unsure who—or what—to believe.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
Then the questions begin.
Why is this happening?
How long will it last?
Why does one person recover in months while another struggles for years?
The reality is that there are still many unanswered questions about topical steroid withdrawal, and no single treatment has been proven to work for everyone.
But one thing has become increasingly clear.
No two people experience TSW in exactly the same way.
Which means no two people necessarily need exactly the same support.
Rather than asking,
“What’s the best treatment?”
we believe a more helpful question is:
“What does your body need right now?”

Every Recovery Story Is Different
Although TSW begins after stopping topical steroids, many of the factors that influence recovery may be unique to each individual.
These may include:
  • Nutritional status
  • Digestive health
  • Sleep
  • Stress and nervous system regulation
  • Environmental exposures
  • Existing eczema severity
  • Overall health
That doesn’t mean these factors caused TSW.
But understanding them may help you better support your body while it heals.
Because every person’s health story is unique.

Understanding Comes Before Effective Action
When you’re in the middle of TSW, it’s easy to become overwhelmed.
One person recommends fasting.
Another says to avoid moisturisers.
Someone else recommends a long list of supplements.
Social media is full of conflicting advice.
The problem often isn’t a lack of information.
It’s knowing which advice actually applies to you.
We believe understanding comes before effective action.
Before considering supplements, herbs or dietary changes, we first want to understand your health as a whole.
Not just your skin.

Looking Beyond the Skin
Although TSW affects the skin, your skin doesn’t exist in isolation.
It is constantly influenced by the immune system, digestion, nutrition, hormones, sleep and the nervous system.
When your body is under significant stress, these systems often affect one another.
That’s why we don’t focus solely on what you apply to your skin.
We also look at the factors that may be supporting—or slowing—your body’s ability to recover.

Our Approach
Our Whole Health Assessment™ combines:
  • Your health history
  • Steroid history
  • Current symptoms
  • Food diary
  • Functional Health Screening™
to help identify patterns that may be contributing to your overall health picture.
The aim isn’t to promise a cure.
Nor is it to suggest there is one missing supplement or one perfect diet.
Our aim is to help you understand your health well enough to make informed decisions with confidence, reduce unnecessary trial and error, and focus on the areas most likely to support your recovery.

Supporting Your Body During Recovery
Recovery from TSW can place enormous demands on the body.
While everyone’s needs are different, many people benefit from supporting the foundations of health.
These may include:
  • Maintaining adequate nutrition
  • Supporting the skin barrier
  • Improving sleep where possible
  • Gentle movement when tolerated
  • Managing stress and supporting nervous system regulation
  • Reducing unnecessary irritants and environmental triggers
These aren’t quick fixes.
They’re ways of creating an environment in which your body has the best opportunity to recover.

You Don’t Have to Figure It Out Alone

One of the hardest parts of TSW is the uncertainty.
Not knowing what’s normal.
Not knowing what to try next.
Not knowing whether you’re making progress.
Sometimes the greatest value isn’t another supplement recommendation.
It’s finally understanding what’s happening in your own body.

Every person’s health story is unique.
We believe their approach should be too.
